Innovative microsurgery reduces risk of incontinence, impotence

Doctors at Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune, New Jersey, are among the first in the country to use an innovative new procedure to reduce or eliminate unwanted side effects of prostate removal.

Matthew S. Tobin, MD, urologist, and Andrew I. Elkwood, MD, plastic and reconstructive microsurgeon, both affiliated with Jersey Shore Medical Center, perform the procedure called radical retropubic prostatectomy with sural nerve graft, which removes the cancerous area as well as reestablishes the nerves severed by the surgery, allowing the body to function normally without any of the traditional side effects.
