Method using clots to block arteries effective, safe for small liver tumors

by Sonia Nichols, senior medical writer - U.S. government researchers at the National Institutes of Health have proclaimed chemoembolization with autologous blood clots a safe and effective method for treating unresectable liver cancer tumors.

The embolization method is known as short-Tae, or S-TAE. In S-TAE, doctors inject a compound containing iodized oil and chemotherapy along with blood clot into a hepatic artery in order to shrink tumor size and shut down a tumor's blood supply.
