Hepatocyte growth factor antagonist controls spread of pancreatic tumors

by Sonia Nichols, senior medical writer - Recombinant viruses encoding for the hepatocyte growth factor competitor NK4 can control the dissemination of pancreatic cancers in mice.

Scientists think NK4 might afford similar protection against pancreatic cancer metastasis in human patients.

"NK4, composed of the N-terminal hairpin and subsequent four-kringle domains of hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), acts not only as a competitive antagonist for HGF but also as a potent angiogenesis inhibitor," explained Michiyo Saimura and the other members of a research team at Kyushu University Graduate School of Medical Sciences, Fukuoka, Japan.
