Virus activates a protein sometimes linked to onset of cancer

by Sonia Nichols, senior medical writer - New evidence has linked hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection with the activation of STAT3 protein, which has been implicated in cancer pathogenesis.

"The signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT) family proteins are transcription factors critical in mediating cytokine signaling," described researchers at Kyushu University of Fukuoka, Japan.

STAT3, they explained, has been linked to tumorigenesis, but until now, knowledge of how its activation becomes persistent has been sketchy.
