Versatile immunosuppressant drug may have a new role in radiotherapy

U.S. researchers have discovered that rapamycin, a drug developed as an immunosuppressant and now being used in cardiovascular stents and also being tested as a chemotherapy agent to prevent tumor cell proliferation, may have yet another role - enhancing the effectiveness of radiotherapy for cancer patients.

Research in mice at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, has shown that rapamycin boosts the therapeutic effect of radiation by delaying the regrowth of brain tumors after treatment.

Their findings were presented at the EORTC-NCI-AACR Symposium on Molecular Targets and Cancer Therapeutics, in Frankfurt, Germany.
