MDM2 oncogene inhibitors show broad range of anticancer activity

by Sonia Nichols, senior medical writer - Inhibitors that can block MDM2 oncogene will be effective against prostate cancer cells regardless of p53 tumor suppressor gene status, researchers suggest.

According to Hui Wang and colleagues at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, prostate cancer and many other cancers overexpress MDM2 oncogene. However, MDM2 antisense oligonucleotides can prevent prostate cancer growth even when p53 expression is not normal.
