Suramin analogues reduce the invasive capacity of cancer

by Sonia Nichols, senior medical writer-Suramin analogues can reduce the metastatic potential of certain cancers by inhibiting heparanase-driven angiogenesis, researchers say. "Heparanase, a heparan sulfate-specific endo-beta-D-glucoronidase, plays an important role in tumor cell metastasis through the degradation of extracellular matrix heparan sulfate proteoglycans," explained Dario Marchetti and colleagues, researchers at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
