Delayed neutrophil apoptosis is reversed by melatonin treatment

The neutrophil apoptosis delay related to inflammatory response is higher in hepatectomy than cholecystectomy patients and may be reversed by melatonin treatment.

According to a study from Taiwan, "Delayed neutrophil apoptosis has been implicated as the mechanism of the systemic inflammatory response. Herein, we examined the effect of melatonin on neutrophil apoptosis in ischemia and reperfusion of the human liver.

"We studied 7 patients receiving elective hepatectomy for liver tumor and 10 patients receiving laparoscopic cholecystectomy for gallstones.
