Rare pineal region central nervous system tumors called papillary tumors may derive from ependymocytes.

According to recent research published in the American Journal of Surgical Pathology, "Primary papillary tumors of the central nervous system are rare.

"We have encountered a series of 6 papillary tumors of the pineal region with distinctive features that appear to represent a clinicopathologic entity. The tumors occurred in 4 women and 2 men, ranging in age from 19-53 yrs.
