E-cadherin is a marker for the risk of liver cancer recurrence after resection

by Sonia Nichols, senior medical writer - Researchers in Japan have identified a marker that predicts the risk of cancer recurrence following surgery for primary liver cancer.

The marker is E-cadherin, a glycoprotein that regulates epithelial cell-to-cell adhesion, according to Jun Inayoshi and colleagues, Niigata University School of Medicine. As recurrence increases, E-cadherin levels fall, their study data suggests.
