Research centers share $35 million grant to identify disease's causes

The University of Cincinnati is among four U.S. research centers to share a 7-year, $35 million federal grant to identify causes of breast cancer.

Cincinnati's share of the money from the U.S. National Institutes of Health is to be a total of $9.6 million, or about $1.37 million a year. Grants also were awarded to Michigan State University, the University of California, San Francisco, and the Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Some causes of breast cancer are known, such as having a family history of the disease or long-term use of hormone replacement therapy, but many cases are not easily explained.
