Mammography may not be appropriate for some cognitively impaired women

Degree of cognitive impairment, comorbidity, and lifespan should be considered when contemplating mammography in older women, researchers say. According to published research from the United States, "Mammographic screening for breast cancer in cognitively impaired women poses significant ethical questions. Many women with dementia should not be screened because of the greater harm than benefits and the difficulty in obtaining informed consent.
