New type of breast tumor might respond to prostate cancer drugs

Scientists have discovered a new type of breast tumor that possibly could be treated with drugs similar to the ones used against prostate cancer, the 4th European Breast Cancer Conference heard March 17, 2004.

Many of the genes expressed in the newly discovered type are involved in the metabolism of male sex hormones (androgens) or are known to express proteins that carry androgen receptors on their surfaces. Blocking androgen receptors is an effective strategy in prostate cancer, and therefore similar anti-androgen drugs might prove to be effective against this type of breast tumor.
