Younger survivors suffer more long-term after effects

There's a growing need for special programs to be tailored to the needs of long-term cancer survivors.

Younger women who survive breast cancer have particular problems in coping with the physical and psychological after effects, even 10 years later, said Lonneke van de Poll-Franse, of the Comprehensive Cancer Centre South in Eindhoven, The Netherlands, speaking at the 4th European Breast Cancer Conference on March 17, 2004.

She studied questionnaire responses received from 183 patients who had been diagnosed with breast cancer 10 years ago. She found that 65% of the women were still receiving specialist care and that 52% had specific complaints, the...
