Breast cancer gene carriers not at greater risk of relapse

Carrying the highly aggressive BRCA breast cancer genes does not appear to be a risk factor for local relapse after treatment.

This is puzzling, Suzette Delaloge, an assistant professor in the breast cancer unit at the Institut Gustave Roussy in Villejuif, France, told the 4th European Breast Cancer Conference in her March 17, 2004, presentation, because the tumors of patients carrying the BRCA1 gene share many of the characteristics typical of breast cancer in young non-carriers patients, and BRCA carriers are known to have a higher rate of getting a second tumor in the same or opposite breast.
