Childhood hepatitis B e antigen seroconversion may be a risk for liver cancer.

"We prospectively followed 426 children with chronic hepatitis B virus infection. During 6250 person-years, 2 boys developed hepatocellular carcinoma. with an incidence of 32 per 100,000 person-years," researchers in Taiwan report.

"Both had e antigen seroconversion in early childhood and cirrhosis," said W.H. Wen and colleagues, National Taiwan University Hospital, Department of Pediatrics.

"Early e antigen seroconversion and/or cirrhosis may be risk factors for hepatocellular carcinoma," they concluded.
