In some countries, mortality from prostate cancer is decreasing

Decreasing mortality rates from prostate cancer may not be due solely to screening, researchers say.

"Within the last decade prostate cancer mortality rates have started to decrease in some countries," investigators in Sweden report.

"Although it is tempting to assume that these trends are a result of earlier diagnosis and aggressive therapeutic intervention, as a consequence of prostate-specific antigen screening, definitive results from randomized trials of screening will not be available for several years," wrote J.E. Damber and colleagues, Sahlgrenska University Hospital, Department of Urology.
