Study may predict recurrence of head and neck cancer

A new study of tumor gene expression patterns may help doctors predict recurrence of head and neck cancer.

Dr. Charles M. Perou, assistant professor of genetics and pathology and laboratory medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine, led the study, which was published in the May 18 issue of Cancer Cell.

Researchers based their findings on the gene expression patterns of 60 head and neck tumor samples from patients at the University's hospital. The samples were assayed using DNA microarrays.
