Metastases may not always come from the primary tumor

Researchers ponder the possibility that some metastatic disease may not arise from the primary tumor.

"Metastatic disease is a major cause of morbidity and mortality," investigators in England report.

"However, it is not clear if all metastases originate from the primary tumor or whether metastases themselves have the capacity to metastasize," wrote C.R. Tait and colleagues, General Infirmary, Department of Surgery.

"In this review, the evidence for the latter phenomenon, and its biological and clinical implications, is discussed," the researchers concluded.
