Cancer research effort nets $350,000 from lemonade stands

Alex's Lemonade Stand, the charity started by a young cancer patient to benefit cancer research, tallied $350,000 in donations as of June 14, 2004, from lemonade fund-raisers held nationwide over the weekend.

"We're ahead of where we wanted to be," said Jay Scott, whose 8-year-old daughter, Alex, held her first stand in 2000. "There's still a lot that haven't reported."

The preliminary amount included figures from 114 of the estimated 1,000 stands held.

Alex, who had raised a total of $200,000 the previous 4 years, hoped to raise $1 million this year. Since the charity typically receives about $5 in mail donations for each $1...
