A new transcriptional regulator derailed in carcinomas

The function of SMYD3 - a newly discovered gene that is overexpressed in the majority of colorectal carcinomas - may be a key factor in human carcinogenesis, according to new research.

Colorectal and hepatocellular carcinomas are among the leading causes of cancer deaths worldwide, and yet selective treatments remain elusive.

To understand the mechanisms underlying these cancers, Yusuke Nakamura and colleagues University of Tokyo, writing in the August 2004 issue of Nature Cell Biology, looked for genes that are up-regulated in these malignancies; they discovered that SMYD3 is overexpressed in the majority of colorectal and hepatocellular...
