Peritoneal washing cytology as a diagnostic and prognostic tool reviewed

Pathologists in private practice in Brisbane, Australia, recently reviewed peritoneal washing cytology as a diagnostic and prognostic tool for gynecologic cancers.

"Peritoneal washing cytology (PWC) is a useful indicator of ovarian surface involvement and peritoneal dissemination by ovarian tumors. It may identify subclinical peritoneal spread and thus provide valuable staging and prognostic information, particularly for nonserous ovarian tumors," wrote P. Shield and colleagues at Sullivan Nicolaides Pathology.
