Traffic studies link busy roads to health problems

Living near busy roads increases the risk of asthma, cancer and other health problems, according to a report.

The Sierra Club summarized 24 pollution studies. The author said the studies give weight to their arguments against Maryland's proposed Inter County Connector and Virginia's plans to widen the Capital Beltway.

"Anyone living near a major roadway with more than 20,000 vehicles a day is at risk," said Brett Hulsey, author of the new report Highway Health Hazards. "The Sierra Club is pushing for a Purple Line (railway) and trying to expand Metro lines."
