Study does not support protective role for circulating lignans

Study findings from the U.S. suggest lignan concentrations in serum do not contribute to protection against breast cancer.

"It has been proposed that phytoestrogens protect against breast cancer. Lignans are the main class of phytoestrogens in Western diets. We conducted a case-control study of breast cancer and serum levels of the main human lignan, enterolactone, nested within a prospective cohort study, the New York University Women's Health Study," wrote A. Zeleniuch-Jacquotte and colleagues, New York University.
