Data indicate nodal sampling or dissection is unnecessary in DCIS cases

Study data show risk of recurrence of axillary lymph node involvement in ductal carcinoma in situ is low enough that nodal sampling or dissection is unnecessary in these cases. "Widespread use of screening mammography has resulted in a remarkable increase in the incidence (or detection rate) of ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). Axillary lymph node involvement in DCIS is reported to occur at a frequency of 1%-12%. Over the past few years, however, there has been increasing emphasis on axillary sampling, limited axillary dissection, and the potential role of sentinel lymph node biopsy.
