California controller names Philip Pizzo, MD, to stem-cell oversight committee

State Controller Steve Westly appointed the dean of Stanford's Medical School to help oversee stem-cell research in California.

Westly named Philip A. Pizzo, MD, to the Independent Citizen's Oversight Committee that will govern the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine established by Proposition 71.

Pizzo has been dean of the Stanford School of Medicine, Stanford University, since April 2001. Before joining Stanford, he was physician-in-chief of Children's Hospital in Boston and chair of the Department of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School.
