Mississippi coalition urges lawmakers to revive cigarette tax bill

A coalition of health groups is urging Mississippi lawmakers to resurrect a tobacco tax bill that died in a Senate committee.

"We simply say to the Senate leadership: Do the right thing. Lives are at stake," Pam Shaw of the Children's Defense Fund said March 2, 2005.

The Children's Defense Fund is one of about 40 groups in Communities for a Clean Bill of Health, the coalition that's asking lawmakers to add $1 per pack to cigarette taxes.

The coalition says raising the tax will improve public health by reducing the number of smokers. Some lawmakers also have touted a cigarette tax increase as a way to shore up the ailing Medicaid...
