Better outcome had with treatment by high-caseload surgeons

A study from Western Australia confirms what other studies have found: outcome of a surgical procedure is improved with treatment by a surgeon who's performed that procedure many times.

In this case, the procedure is surgery for invasive breast cancer.

"We have assessed the outcomes for all women diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in Western Australia during 1989, 1994, and 1999, and compared the results for surgeons who treat 20 or more cases per year with those of surgeons who treat less," wrote D.M. Ingram and colleagues in the Breast Center of Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, Perth.
