Extracellular matrix protein collagen VI can modulate tumor behavior

An investigation of how fat cells contribute to breast cancer revealed that the extracellular matrix protein collagen VI can affect tumor behavior.

Increased adipose mass is associated with an elevated risk of breast cancer, but little was known about how fat cells actually contribute to carcinogenesis. In the study, which was published online on April 14, 2005, in advance of the print publication of the May 2005 issue of the Journal of Clinical Investigation, Philipp Scherer at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York and others aimed to identify factors that are secreted by adipocytes and which are present in breast cancer stromal tissue.
