Glutathione trapping assay measures microsomal oxidation of furan in vitro

A novel assay provides an accurate assessment of furan oxidation in culture systems.

"Furan is a liver carcinogen and toxicant," that is "oxidized to the reactive dialdehyde, cis-2-butene-1,4-dial, by microsomal enzymes," scientists in the United States explained. "This reactive metabolite readily reacts with glutathione nonenzymatically to form conjugates."
