Mechanism for blood vessel growth discovered, maybe important for cancer treatment

Researchers at the Swedish biotech company AngioGenetics Sweden AB describe a new fundamental mechanism for the formation of new blood vessels or angiogenesis that could lead to new treatments for cancer and chronic inflammatory diseases, says Christer Betsholtz, professor at Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm. Blood vessels form by sprouting of new branches from already existing vessels. These sprouts elongate, branch and connect with other vessels to form a communicating vessel network. The process is called angiogenesis and is essential for normal embryonic development, tissue growth and repair as well as for diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular disease....
