"The first-generation selective estrogen receptor modulator ( SERM) tamoxifen has been the mainstream hormone therapy in breast cancer. Tamoxifen benefits all stages of the disease, but its use increases the risk of uterine cancer and thromboembolic events and it can only be administered for 5 years," scientists writing in the journal Nature Clinical Practice Endocrinology & Metabolism report.
