Individuals With History of Nonmelanoma Skin Cancer at Greater Risk for Future Cancers

Individuals with a history of nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC), especially those who had it at a younger age, are at significantly greater risk for future cancers, according to a study led by Anthony J. Alberg, Ph.D., of the Hollings Cancer Center at the Medical University of South Carolina. The study, which followed more than 19,000 people for 16 years, will be published August 26 in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. After adjusting for individual variables, researchers found that individuals with a history of NMSC had a two-fold increase in the risk of new cancers compared with individuals with no skin cancer history.
