Women approaching and exiting menopause are in a bind. As hormone levels fluctuate and decline, they experience a range of uncomfortable symptoms that can include hot flashes, night sweats, mood decline, and loss of libido. As common as these symptoms are, women's options for relief are limited. Researchers reported in 2002 that the hormone replacement therapy Prempro(R), which introduces foreign estrogens, obtained from pregnant mare's urine, into a woman's body, increased rates of breast cancer and stroke, (per JAMA 2002; 288:321-333.) causing American women to reject the drug en masse.
