Research from Sapporo Medical University, Department of Biochemistry broadens understanding of genetics and colon cancer

Investigators publish new data in the report 'Epigenetic drivers of genetic alterations.' "DNA methylation plays a key role in the silencing of cancer-related genes, thereby affecting numerous cellular processes, including the cell cycle checkpoint, apoptosis, signal transduction, cell adhesion, and angiogenesis. DNA methylation also affects the expression of genes involved in maintaining the integrity of the genome through DNA repair and detoxification of reactive oxygen species," scientists writing in the journal Advances In Genetics report.
