Cardiac Care
Montgomery County, Maryland, to require defibrillators in health clubs
December 7th, 2004
The measure requires clubs to have at least one of the machines on-hand, along with a minimum of one staffer who knows how to work it. Defibrillators give a mild shock to people having heart attacks. The idea is to keep the heart pumping until help arrives. Last week, an elderly woman at the FDR Memorial in Washington, D.C., was revived by a defibrillator. The machines cost between $1,100 and $1,500, according to the council. There are more than 120 licensed health clubs in Montgomery County.
