Absence of heme oxygenase-1 exacerbates myocardial injury in diabetic mice

The absence of heme oxygenase-1 was found to exacerbate myocardial injury in a study of diabetic mice.

"Increased production of reactive oxygen species contributes to the etiology of diabetes complications. Pathophysiological stimuli that increase oxidative stress upregulate heme oxygenase (HO)-1, a cytoprotective hemedegrading enzyme. We hypothesized that HO-1 may be important in myocardial injury that is exacerbated by diabetes," wrote X.L. Liu and colleagues at Brigham & Women's Hospital, Boston.
