Combined DASH and weight loss improves blood pressure

Hypertension accounts for 5%-10% of clinical problems seen in general medical practice and may be corrected by successful weight loss in about half of patients.

The Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet was shown previously to be effective in reducing blood pressure. Reporting in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Nowson and colleagues in Australia compared the effectiveness of a modified DASH diet stressing four daily servings of fruit and vegetables and three servings of low-fat dairy products with fish three times a week with that of a conventional low-fat diet both in promoting weight loss and in reducing blood pressure.
