Woman says U.S. government blocking transplant

A woman whose niece has agreed to donate a kidney to save her aunt's life says the U.S. government is blocking the transplant by not allowing the donor to travel from the Philippines.

"They're treating someone who wants to come here legally to help, worse than they would treat a criminal," Norma Reynes, MD, said.

Reynes is suffering from kidney failure as a result of high blood pressure and has been on a waiting list for a transplant for two years.

The 61-year-old specialist in internal medicine, who closed her practice August 31, 2004, because of her declining health, said her 25-year-old niece, Jennelyn Gervacio, may be her last...
