Cleveland Clinic establishes heart-brain institute

The Cleveland Clinic has received a $17.2 million gift from The Earl and Doris Bakken Foundation to develop a unique institute dedicated to researching the medical interconnections between the heart and the brain.

Bakken is a cofounder and former CEO of Medtronic, Inc., a medical-technology company.

The new center will be called The Earl and Doris Bakken Heart-Brain Institute at The Cleveland Clinic (BHBI). It will be the first of its kind in the world, establishing the new field of heart-brain medicine.
