A new study, "Effects of alcohol consumption on iron metabolism in mice with hemochromatosis mutations," is now available. According to recent research published in the journal Alcoholism, "Alcoholic liver disease is associated with increased hepatic iron accumulation. The liver-derived peptide hepcidin is the central regulator of iron homeostasis and recent animal studies have demonstrated that exposure to alcohol reduces hepcidin expression."
