Common carotid artery stiffness may be an early indicator of atherogenesis in older women

Postmenopausal increase in common carotid artery stiffness as well as lipid profile occurs earlier than the increase in intima-media thickness.

"While cardiovascular disease is a major cause of death in elderly women, relatively little is known regarding the influence of menopause on atherogenesis," noted scientists in Japan. "We tried to characterize postmenopausal changes in the arterial properties."
