Study findings from Johns Hopkins University broaden understanding of heart disease

A new study, 'The absence of coronary calcification does not exclude obstructive coronary artery disease or the need for revascularization in patients referred for conventional coronary angiography,' is now available. "This study was designed to evaluate whether the absence of coronary calcium could rule out >or=50% coronary stenosis or the need for revascularization. The latest American Heart Association guidelines suggest that a calcium score (CS) of zero might exclude the need for coronary angiography among symptomatic patients," scientists writing in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology report.
