Women with familial cancer risk understand risk of prophylactic mastectomy

Patients with a familial risk of breast cancer contemplating prophylactic mastectomy (PM) understood the risks, but patients without prior breast cancer reported better mental and emotional health status, researchers find.

"A consecutive sample of 56 women with a familial risk for breast cancer who were considering a prophylactic mastectomy (PM) completed questionnaires preoperatively concerning risk perception, expectations with regard to surgery, anxiety and depressive symptoms (the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HAD) scale) and quality of life (The Swedish SF-36 Health Survey)," scientists in Sweden report.
