Sentinel node biopsy holds promise for staging head, neck cancers, study says

Sentinel node biopsy, a technique used to determine whether breast cancer or melanoma (a type of skin cancer) has spread to the lymph nodes, now shows potential in the staging of head and neck cancers, according to a study published in the August issue of the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

Lymph nodes, small, bean-shaped organs located throughout the body, including the neck, filter bacteria and other invading organisms from the lymphatic system, a part of the immune system that helps fight infections and cancers. The sentinel node (SN) is the first lymph node to receive drainage from a cancerous tumor.
