Lifelong avoidance of tobacco and moderate alcohol consumption benefit life expectancy.

Researchers in Australia conducted a study "to measure the association between major causes of mortality and tobacco use; and the association between major causes of mortality and alcohol use, after adjusting for tobacco use."
