Pioglitazone improves glycemic control and lipid profiles in type 2 diabetes

by Maria G. Essig, MS, ELS, senior medical writer - Results from a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, clinical trial involving 41 centers in Canada and Spain demonstrated that pioglitazone significantly improved glycemic control and lipid profile in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Matthias Herz and colleagues at Eli Lilly and Company randomly assigned 297 type 2 diabetic patients, 24 to 85 years old, to receive 30 mg pioglitazone daily (n=99), 45 mg pioglitazone daily (n=99), or placebo (n=99) for 16 weeks.
