U.S. NIH awards nearly $1.5 million for study of human bone precursor cells

Velcura Therapeutics, Inc. was awarded $1,452,000 to study the mechanisms by which primitive cells develop into mature bone-forming cells.

Velcura, as part of its work developing therapies for bone diseases such as osteoporosis, investigates how human bone cells function. The grant was awarded by the National Institute of Diabetes & Digestive & Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) based on NIDDK's interests in endocrinology, metabolic diseases, and stem cells.

The grant funds research that investigates the control of stem cells found in the bone marrow of children and adults (as opposed to embryonic stem cells) and their relationship to early and mature bone...
