Reports outline diabetes study results from University of Montreal

"Drak2 is a member of the death-associated protein family and a serine threonine kinase. In this study, we investigated its role in 13 cell survival and diabetes," scientists in Montreal, Canada report. "Drak2 mRNA and protein were rapidly induced in islet 13 cells after stimulation by inflammatory lymphokines known to be present in type 1 diabetes. Drak2 up-regulation was accompanied by increased 13 cell apoptosis. 13 cell apoptosis caused by the said stimuli was inhibited by Drak2 knockdown using small interfering RNA.
