American Indian center, Harm Reduction Project to track HIV/AIDS

Health officials are hoping to use a new federal grant to get a more accurate picture of the HIV and AIDS rates among Utah's American Indians.

The Indian Walk-in Center in Salt Lake City and the Harm Reduction Project received the $330,000 grant from the Centers for Disease Control to find out if the numbers of Indians with HIV and AIDS is underreported.

Among the state's 30,000 Indians reported in the last Census, only 10 American Indians or Alaska Natives reported having HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, from the 721 statewide cases.
